Know More

Lavandula, popularly known as Lavender, is a perennial evergreen plant that is primarily cultivated for its violet or lilac flowers that are used to produce the most extensively used essential oil globally for more than 2500 years. Indigenous to the Mediterranean, Middle East, and India, Lavender belongs to the famous mint family, Lamiaceae, and is characterized by a sweet, herbaceous, earthy, and floral aroma. Among ~50 known species of Lavender, Lavandula angustifolia is the most well regarded species for its potent aromatherapy benefits.

Lavender derives its name from the Latin verb ‘lavare’ meaning ‘to wash’ as the Romans used Lavender to scent their bathwater. Ancient Egyptians used Lavender for mummification as they considered it holy and placed the flowers around the dead to ward off the unpleasant stench. In medieval Europe, washerwomen were called ‘lavenders’ due to their practice of laying freshly washed laundry over Lavender bushes to dry and scent the laundry and keep it moth and insect free. This practice gave rise to the phrase ‘to be laid out in lavender’. Lavender was highly valued by royalty, especially Louis XIV, who loved Lavender scented baths. Queen Elizabeth I was known to have vases filled with Lavender on her table, wore Lavender as perfume, and used Lavender throughout the castles for everything imaginable. Considered a herb of love, in Tudor times, maidens consumed a Lavender brew on St. Lukes day to discover their soulmates’ identities. Legend has that Lavender was supposedly used by Cleopatra to seduce Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony. As a result of its global popularity, Lavender is cultivated all over the world with Provence, France leading production with its famous lavender fields.

Since time immemorial, Lavender Essential Oil has been the most widely used Essential Oil for aromatherapy worldwide due to its extensive range of health benefits. The soothing and relaxing aroma of Lavender Essential Oil is known to have a calming effect on the nervous system, making it a natural alternative for easing stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression. It also helps fight insomnia and promote relaxing and restful sleep. Diffusing Lavender Essential Oil in your room or dabbing a few drops on the skin can help drive away feelings of emotional distress, uplift the mood, and promote a sense of relaxation and tranquility.

Perfumery Applications

Lavender is a fragrance that has been used for more than 2,500 years and has been a part of historic perfumery and apothecary traditions for very long. It made its first appearance in a great perfume in 1892, Fougère Royale by Houbigant. This iconic perfume Fougère Royale gave rise to a new olfactory family ‘The Fern Family’ to which Lavender belongs. Out of all the scents, Lavender is the one that is most commonly recognized for its relaxing, calming, and anxiolytic properties. In addition to its pleasing aroma, it helps to relax and calm down.

Most perfumers in the world consider Lavender Essential Oil as an essential component, an ingredient that can't be avoided. "Lavender is one of the most noble and marvelous components that we have in our arsenal of essential oils" as per a famous perfumer Jean Paul Guerlain, the creator of Heritage.

Historically Lavender was a dominant note in several famous perfumes such as Yardley of London English Lavender EDT Spray; however, it is more commonly used in a very light and subtle way in most modern-day fragrances. With its calming floral and herbaceous notes, Lavender is used not only in women's perfumes but also in men's colognes and unisex perfumes. When used in making perfumes, Lavender does not always smell sweet and floral; instead, it is known to interact with other scents in an interesting way to manifest itself in very different forms - spicy, green, fresh, minty, or herbaceous - that can suit pretty much every taste pallet. Perfumers find Lavender as an interesting addition for the reason that when mixed with certain fragrances, its fragrance can be pushed to be either 'minty and cool' or 'herbaceous and spicy'.

It pairs well both with fresh and herbaceous aromas such as Clary Sage, Rosemary, Pine, and Sage, and softer and sweeter aromas such as Bergamot, Ylang Ylang, Patchouli, and Neroli.
