Perfumery Applications

Until recently, Peppermint Essential Oil was not a very popular perfumery ingredient because its strong, minty aroma was thought to evoke associations with toothpaste and other household items. Over the past few years, there has been a resurgence in Peppermint Essential Oil in perfumery. Perfumers value it for its refreshing, invigorating, minty, and intense aroma. Its characteristic aroma is from the presence of menthol and menthone. Menthol has a distinct cold smell, with spicy, camphoric, and bright notes, whereas menthone has an intensely minty and clean aroma.

The sweet, green, and earthy notes of Peppermint have been used in men’s perfumes and colognes for many years now. ‘Polo Sport’ by Ralph Lauren was one of the first perfumes that contained the first notes of Peppermint Oil. It is also a sought-after ingredient for men's aftershaves where it is added for its refreshing coolness. When used in small amounts in perfumes, Peppermint Essential Oil adds a very light, subtle layer of breeziness, freshness, and complexity to fragrances.

Perfumers often use Peppermint as a top note to create a cool and fresh characteristic tone in the initial smell. The oil is highly volatile and tends to evaporate rather quickly, and thus the minty tones are employed early-on at the initial stages of the perfume’s creation. Peppermint Essential Oil is known to beautifully pair with warm, spicy, and woody fragrances such as Frankincense, Cypress, Rosewood, Sandalwood, and Vetiver, lending a dash of light-heartedness to the rich, deep aromas. It is also known to beautifully blend with several floral and citrus oils, which includes, but is not limited to, Lavender, Lemon, Geranium, Juniper Berry, Ylang Ylang, and Bergamot. Not surprisingly, distinctively spicy and herbal tones such as Rosemary and Eucalyptus, complement the fresh, vibrant notes of Peppermint Essential Oil. Apart from its use in perfumery, Peppermint finds is extensively used in the world of personal care fragrances. One such example is the use of Peppermint Oil in Yardley’s English Lavender soap to push the freshness of Lavender to the users.

Undeniably, Peppermint Essential Oil has been enjoyed in the perfume industry for its invigorating and spirit reviving properties in perfumes, and over the past few years, there has been a comeback in the use of Peppermint Essential Oil in many male and female fragrances.
