How to use essential oils

How to use essential oils

We care about your safety and well-being, and would love to see you benefit from these priceless elixirs. Please feel free to reach us at for any questions

Aroma Tierra essential oils and essential oil blends are pure organic compounds and
should be used with proper mechanism for maximum benefits

1. Candle diffusion

This is the most ancient and the most popular form of using essential oils. It is a great way to experience amazing fragrance as well as aromatherapy benefits of the oils. In addition, candle diffusers are visually appealing and add to the aesthetics of the atmosphere

a. Fill approximately 5ml water in the top tray/vessel of the diffuser
b. Add 2-3 drops of essential oil(s)/ essential oil blends to the water
c. Light a candle and add to the bottom chamber
d. As the water heats us, the vapour carries essential oil molecules across the surrounding resulting in a great aroma and therapeutic benefits

Candle diffusion of essential oil

Tips -
• Avoid using cheap diffusers with coated chemicals that get mixed in water and have toxic effects when diffused in the air
• We recommend using beeswax tea-light candles for diffusers. Beeswax candles are chemical free and have many advantages over paraffin wax

2. Electric humidification

Electric diffusers are increasingly becoming popular for fragrance diffusion and are modern day equivalents of candle diffusers. They are perfect for use at the work-desk, cars and the living spaces.

Easy to use, most diffusers just require adding water and 3-4 drops of essential oil(s)/ essential oil blends to the diffuser chamber. Aroma Tierra electric diffusers have specific instructions manual enclosed with the product.

We recommend using electric diffusers with ultrasonic humidifier technology that does not involve heating

3. Nebulization

It is easy to confuse nebulizers with electric diffusers. However, there is one key difference in that nebulizers don’t require water. You can directly put essential oils or fragrance oils in a small bottle – the nebulizer picks the oil from the bottle and diffuses pure vapours in the surrounding

4. Bath

Did you know that most cosmetic companies use essential oils (in miniscule quantities) in all your bath products!

It should be no surprise that some essential oils and blends are excellent additives to bath water for a deeply relaxing and rejuvenating bath. This is a great way to enjoy aromatherapy benefits through both vapours and skin contact, and works particularly well for emotional benefits such as stress relief, mood uplifting, etc. This method also imparts a long lasting fragrance to the body.

For best results, add 4-8 drops of essential oil to a bucket/small tub or 8-15 drops to a full batch. You may find out about specific benefits of your oil/blend over the internet or write to us at

5. Topical use

Like any natural product, essential oils vary in potency and exact composition in different batches. We do not recommend use of essential oils on the skin. Many of our customers cite sources on the internet that mention use of essential oils on the skin – however, we continue to discourage such practice unless under the supervision of a certified aromatherapist or a medical practitioner.

Having said that, essential oils when mixed with carrier oils such as almond oil, jojoba oil, argan oil, etc. are excellent for cosmetic use as well as massage. Multiple essential oils can be mixed together to create new blends and perfumes

6. Steam Inhalation

Some essential oils (such as eucalyptus and menthol) are believed to possess specific decongestant properties. For the inhalation technique, refer the following steps:
a. Use 2-3 drops in a vessel with boiling water
b. Cover your head with a towel to inhale the vapours in deep breaths

Please note that we do not recommend this as a replacement or alternative to any other medicine for any specific ailment/condition. We strongly recommend consulting your doctor before using inhalation technique

7. Candles

Easy-to-use and an excellent mechanism for using essential oils are wax candles infused with essential oils. Just light up the wick and enjoy the amazing natural fragrances.

We strongly recommend beeswax candles over other waxes such as paraffin, soy or palm wax. Beeswax candles burn clean and soot-free and are believed to provide air-purifying effects. We discourage the use of paraffin wax which is extracted from petroleum and processed chemically – studies have shown carcinogenic emissions from burning paraffin wax!

8. Compress

Many essential oils can be used for body wipes for deeply relaxing and rejuvenating effects
• Add 4-8 drops to a bowl of warm water
• Soak cloth in water and apply on body

The compress method is commonly used to apply specific essential oils on sore muscles for relief from fatigue and soreness. Please note that we do not recommend this as an alternative to any medicine. For any specific therapeutic use please consult your doctor or a certified aromatherapist.

9. Beauty Products

Essential oils can be blended with creams, lotions, butters, etc. to create a vast range of beauty products. Natural beauty products are increasing in popularity are significantly better than commonly available cosmetics with petroleum extracts and harmful chemicals.

10. Bed time use

Put 2-3 drops on your pillow for amazing natural fragrances that can help you to relax and slip away into blissful sleep

11. Others

Some essential oils/ blends can be used for specific purposes such as in cleaning agents (e.g. lemon oil), as insect repellents (e.g. citronella oil), etc. We encourage you to experiment with your essential oils but always read and double-read the instructions, stay safe and enjoy these amazing gifts of nature!

How to identify pure essential oils

Essential oils are growing in popularity and for good reason – these gifts of nature offer countless beauty and wellness benefits, along with mesmerizing fragrances to soothe our senses. However, the growing demand has mushroomed tons of synthetic products and chemical look-alikes that try to mimic essential oils. Chemicals and synthetic oils are usually cheaper and, unfortunately many sellers deceive unsuspecting customers for a quick profit by peddling these as pure essential oils.
