Know More
Eucalyptus is a large genus of over 650 species of tall trees and shrubs of the Myrtle family. Indigenous to Australia, Tasmania, and surrounding islands, Eucalyptus is commonly known as gum trees or stringybark trees by the Australians. The Eucalyptus derives its name from the Greek words ‘eu’ (well) and ‘kalaptos’ (covered), meaning ‘well covered’, which refers to the bud's covering by the operculum. Though native to Australia, many Eucalyptus species are cultivated in temperate regions around the world, such as India, China, Europe, and the Americas. Out of the 700 species of Eucalyptus, only ~500 species are used to produce Eucalyptus Essential Oil. Species Eucalyptus globulus, also known as Southern Blue Gum, is the most popular species for extracting Eucalyptus Essential Oil and has received the most attention from botanists and researchers.
The Eucalyptus tree was known as ‘cure all’ tree by the Australian Aborigines who used it to treat several health conditions such as cold, wounds, inflammation, etc. An English legend has that Eucalyptus leaf was first used by an English settler on his injury on the advice of this father, who had learned its medicinal properties from studying Aboriginal medicine. The surgeon was impressed by the speed at which his wound healed, without any sign of infection. As the story spread across Australia, the commercial production of Eucalyptus Oil began in earnest. Eucalyptus Oil has been widely studied and used in Ayurvedic medicine, Chinese medicine, and Yunani medicine for centuries and has become an integral part of health & wellness.
Due to its wide range of therapeutic benefits, Eucalyptus Essential Oil is widely used in many pharmaceutical products. Its benefits are mainly attributed to the presence of Eucalyptol, or 1,8 – Cineole, which has decongestant, anti-spasmodic, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and stimulating qualities. Eucalyptus Essential Oil is a potent decongestant and provides relief from respiratory tract infections such as cold, cough, sinus congestion, and stuffiness. It is popularly used in inhalers for cold relief and chest rubs such as Vicks VapoRub. Doing steam inhalation with a few drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil has shown to relieve cold and cough symptoms, clear mucus congestion, and soothe respiratory track. Potent anti-microbial, anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties of Eucalyptus Essential Oil make it a natural and non-toxic disinfectant and cleaning agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria and mold. When diffused, it helps to purify the air and freshen up spaces by eliminating harmful airborne bacteria and viruses.
Eucalyptus Essential Oil helps to promote hair growth by stimulating hair follicles, promoting circulation, improving scalp health, controlling dandruff, and eliminating head lice. It is an invigorating oil that is known to stimulate the brain, soothe the nerves, uplift mood, and improve a sense of overall well-being. Due to the wide variety of ways Eucalyptus Essential Oil can be used, further scientific research is underway to determine its potential benefits.
