Ylang Ylang, or Cananga odorata, is a tropical tree highly valued for its vibrant yellow, night-blooming flowers that release an exotic, sweet, floral, and intense scent with a fruity undertone. The tree blooms year-round and is indigenous to the Southeast Asian countries such as the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and India. Ylang Ylang comes from a Tagalog word ‘ilang ilang’ or ‘ee-lang ee-lang’ which means wilderness, suggesting the tree’s natural habitat. A German sailor was captivated by the flower’s fragrance and was the first to distill Ylang Ylang Essential Oil in a small distillation facility in the Philippines. That gave rise to the trade of Ylang Ylang Essential Oil, and soon the popularity of its fragrance spread through all of Europe and eventually worldwide. As its trade rose, the tree was introduced to the islands of the Indian Ocean in the 18th century, which now leads the global production mainly in Comoros and Madagascar.
