Argan Oil is well-known as ‘liquid gold’ due to its unparalleled benefits for the face, body, hair, nails, and health. The oil is extracted from the kernels of the Argan tree that is indigenous to Morocco and grows virtually nowhere else in the world! The natives have long used Argan Oil as a culinary ingredient and an essential constituent in their beauty regime. The tree has been there for millions of years, but its forest has been on a decline due to years of misuse and neglect, losing more than ~600 ha of forest every year. To protect the Argan forest, UNESCO declared the area a “Biosphere Reserve”.
For centuries, Argan Oil was extracted by the native inhabitants of Morocco, the Berber women, in a very traditional way – by cracking the nut and grounding the kernel by hand using a grindstone to extract the oil. It is a very labor-intensive process that takes about ~10-20 hours of intense manual work to produce ~1 L of the oil. With the rise in popularity of Argan Oil across the globe, modern cold-pressing plants have been setup to produce the oil, with the role of Berber women getting reduced to merely being the supplier of Argan nut kernels.
To help the Berber communities and to protect the Argan forest, NGOs have begun the development of Berber women cooperatives. Government and external agencies have helped in getting the Organic certification of the Argan forest and the oil produced. Today, Argan Oil is exclusively and painstakingly extracted by the Berber women’s cooperatives of Morocco, and most of the profits are distributed among the members of the Berber tribe to help them alleviate illiteracy, poverty and improve sanitation and health. Women-operated Argan Oil cooperative model has been instrumental in empowering Berber women socially and economically.
Argan Oil has gone from being a tribal ingredient to one of the most precious oils globally for its immense anti-aging, skincare, and hair care benefits! It moisturizes dry skin, restores and regenerates skin, helps in delaying aging, protects against environmental damage, and strengthens nails. Argan Oil is exceptionally beneficial for hair too – it deeply nourishes the scalp, soothes dry scalp, helps control dandruff, works as a leave-in conditioner, makes hair soft and shiny, and treats damaged hair. In short, Argan Oil is your go-to beauty elixir for the full-body, from head to toe!
