Know More

Bergamot, or Citrus bergamia, is a citrus fruit with a sweet, citrusy, and fruity aroma. Genetic research indicates that the bergamot tree may be a hybrid between lemon and bitter orange trees. The word Bergamot comes from the Italian word ‘bergamotto’ which means ‘bey armut’ or the ‘prince of pears’, the perfect title for what is considered by many as one of the most exotic citrus fragrance. Native to South East Asia, the Bergamot tree was soon introduced to Europe by the Crusaders, and its refreshing aroma changed the way the Europeans fragranced themselves. By the late 1600s, Italian perfumers began blending Bergamot Essential Oil with other woody and floral notes into perfumes known as ‘Eau De Cologne’. That turned out to be the world’s first commercial perfume success, and today, ‘Eau De Cologne’ has become a generic term for perfume. To this day, Bergamot is a popular top note in several world-renowned perfumes such as Miss Dior (by Christian Dior) and Coco Mademoiselle (by Chanel). Not only did Bergamot change the fragrance industry in Europe, but it also transformed the way the Europeans took their tea. Earl Grey tea became popular in England in the 1820s and 1830s for its unique black tea flavoring with Bergamot Essential Oil. Soon Earl Grey Tea gained global popularity for its refreshing flavor and is now served worldwide. Italian regions of Calabria and Sicily lead the global production of Bergamot Essential Oil (>80%), followed by Côte d’Ivoire in Africa. Due to its popularity, the Bergamot tree is also cultivated in Greece, France, Iran, Argentina, Morocco, and Brazil.

Bergamot is a yellow-green fruit with sour and bitter pulp. Unlike other citrus fruits, Bergamot is mainly grown for its Essential Oil than juice or fruit. It is highly valued for its zesty, exotic, and refreshing aroma and finds applications in perfumery, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and food industries. Bergamot Essential Oil is also extremely popular in aromatherapy for its relaxing, calming, anxiolytic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, and analgesic properties.  It calms the nerves and induces a feeling of deep relaxation and peace. It alleviates anxiety and stress by reducing ‘cortisol’, a stress hormone in the body. Diffusing Bergamot Essential Oil indoors or dabbing a few drops on your wrists can help uplift the mood and alleviate stress. It acts as a natural air freshener and eliminates unpleasant odors, leaving behind an uplifting, fresh, and citrus aroma. Spray a few drops of Bergamot and Lavender Essential oils, diluted in water, to freshen your room, upholstery, and bed linens. The topical application of Bergamot Essential Oil helps to even out the skin’s complexion and balance its natural sebum production to keep the skin youthful and healthy. Due to its extensive range of Bergamot Essential Oil uses, there is ongoing scientific research to determine its potential benefits.

Aroma Tierra offers high-quality Organic Bergamot Essential Oil made by cold pressing the rinds of Bergamot fruit harvested from organic farming in Italian region of Calabria. It is 100% organic, pure, natural, and potent, and is free from any chemicals, preservatives, and solvents.

Perfumery Applications

Bergamot Essential Oil appears in top notes of almost ~50% perfumes and ~30% colognes, making it one of the most popular essential oils in perfumery. It has been tied to the fragrance industry for centuries and is a crucial component in several world-renowned perfumes. Its exotic aroma is reminiscent of fresh oranges, but wonderfully more complex, with a floral and spicy undertones.

Its first famous appearance in perfumery dates back to the 17th century, where the renowned perfumer, J.M. Farina used Bergamot Essential Oil as one of the main notes in the first-ever Eau de Cologne. The rich palette of Bergamot sub-tones made it a favorite among royals and soon carved its name out as an imperial favorite. Bergamot was one of the heart ingredients in Napoleon Bonaparte’s favorite soap, Brown Windsor; Napoleon also used to scent himself with the famous Eau de Cologne, which features the Bergamot, and consumed it by liters every day!

Bergamot Essential Oil is found in almost all modern fragrances within most olfactory families. Used in both masculine and feminine fragrances, Bergamot Essential Oil gives the scents an initial zesty, airy, and sparkling note when first inhaled. Although mostly used for its fresh and citrusy notes, Bergamot has a multi-faceted profile that can vary between citrusy and sweet to herbaceous and balsamic with spicy undertones. Bergamot is highly sought after for its invaluable ability to blend notes and balance the aromatic composition of a mixture of ingredients. Its delightful complexity makes Bergamot an irreplaceable choice for inclusion in many perfume blends.

Bergamot pairs well with sweet, floral, and fruity aromas such as Jasmine, Geranium, Lavender, and Ylang Ylang, and also wonderfully complements the woody notes of Vetiver, Patchouli, and Sandalwood. Bergamot is famous for its unique ability to balance herbal compositions that include Rosemary and Thyme. It is used to balance heavy oriental and chypre compositions, and is also known to add a touch of magic in several leathery compositions such as Robert Pigue’s ‘Bandit’. When added to any perfume blend, Bergamot dons various hats and is widely used as a fixer, blender, and modifier.
